Just because it is winter, doesn’t mean your yard can’t still look great. The key to a great-looking lawn year-round is making sure to do your due diligence every season. That means focusing on fertilizer, weed elimination and general lawn upkeep winter, spring, summer and fall.
Winter Lawn Care
During the winter months, focus on stocking up on products so you’re ready once warm temperatures hit. Grab some Compare-N-Save Crabgrass & Sandbur Preventer and apply it to your lawn before crabgrass has a chance to grow. This product is a pre–emergence herbicide so it works on weeds that haven’t grown yet, which is before the weather turns warm and seeds start to sprout.
RM18 Fast-Acting Weed & Grass Killer is also a great product to have to on hand to eliminate those weeds that start sprouting when the weather turns warm. This product starts to work immediately, with visible wilting in 12 hours. It’s rainfast in 30 minutes. Keep in mind this product does work best when the weather is above 60-degrees.
Don’t forget to clean your tools, tune-up your equipment and sharpen your lawnmower blades.
Spring Lawn Care
Come spring, remove any dead plant material, stray leaves and twigs. Use fertilizer and if you haven’t put down a pre-emergence – do it now. Use a heavy-duty herbicide like RM43 to spray fence rows and around barns now to keep them weed-free for up to a year.
If you’re prepping a new garden or flower bed, apply a product like RM18 or Compare-N-Save Quick Acting Weed & Grass Killer. These products will clear an area but won’t harm your soil. You’ll be ready to plant in one to three days.
Summer Lawn Care
Water, water, water. Keep the lawnmower blade high and try not to mow during the hottest part of the day as it will stress out your grass. Spot treat any weeds with RM18 or apply the first application of Compare-N-Save Weed Killer for Lawns which will kill the weeds but won’t harm your grass.
Fall Lawn Care
Fall lawn care is all about allowing your lawn to go out on a high note. Raise your lawnmower height so you never remove more than one-third of the grass blade so your grass retains moisture and nutrients for winter. Add a fall fertilizer to help your grass come back strong in the spring. Use a fertilizer that has a 3:1:2 ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium like a 21-7-14 or 15-5-10. And eliminate any weeds in your lawn before winter with a weed killer like Compare-N-Save Weed Killer for Lawns which works on both cool and warm season grasses like Bahia, Common Bermuda, Bluegrass, Centipede, Fescue, Ryegrass, St. Augustine and Zoysia Grass. Don’t forget to seed any bare spots with a ryegrass like Mayberry Ryegrass, which can tolerate cool temperatures.
